​Maui Environmental Consulting, LLC (MEC) is a Hawaii based Small Business Enterprise offering a wide variety of environmental consulting services related to natural resource management.

 

PROJECTS

 

We have worked with both public and private stakeholders on various natural resource management projects. We have experience in wetland and wildlife ecology, water quality, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP) and environmental permitting.

EXPERIENCE

 

With over eighteen years of environmental consulting experience, MEC is able to provide solutions to complex natural resource issues.

 

Michael Reyes is the Principal and Senior Ecologist at MEC. Michael has worked with public and private stakeholders on a wide array of projects in Hawaii.

Katie Woodbury is an Ecologist at MEC. Katie has worked on riparian corridor rehabilitations, water quality monitoring, and listed species surveys.

In The News:
January 2023 - The Pohakea Watershed Management Plan was recently approved by the Hawaiʻi Department of Health, Clean Water Branch! The goal of the plan is to empower watershed coordinators, stakeholders, resource managers, policy makers, and community members to combat water pollution entering into Maʻalaea Bay. Projects within the watershed are now eligible for Section 319 grant funding from the EPA. These efforts were coordinated by the Polluted Runoff Control Program and made possible with support from the State of Hawaiʻi, Office of Planning and Sustainable Development, Coastal Zone Management Program. December 2021 - In partnership with the Central Maui Soil and Water Conservation District, the Hawai'i Department of Health Clean Water Branch, and Haleakala Ranch, Maui Environmental Consulting, LLC has worked to rehabilitate 7.4 acres of the riparian corridor along Keokea Gulch in Kihei, HI. Approximately 3,000 native plants have been planted along the stream banks to lock in the soils and prevent erosion during heavy rainfall events. The plants are irrigated with R-1 water, reducing the amount of wastewater injected underground and removing excess nutrients from entering into the ocean. Check out the news article here
November 2021 - Storm Water Solutions recently honored the Pohakea Stormwater Management Project by naming it their top project of the year for 2021. You can read the article here.
Southwest Maui Watershed Plan - 2020
We are extremely proud to report the Southwest Maui Watershed Plan developed by Maui Environmental Consulting, LLC has been approved by the Hawaii Department of Health Clean Water Branch and by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. This Plan was developed to provide pollution reduction measures for the 49,688 acre planning area comprised of the Hapapa, Wailea and Mo’oloa watersheds. The area extends from the summit of Haleakalā to the coastal areas of Kihei, Wailea, and Makena. Implementation projects developed by the Plan are meant to improve water quality throughout the watershed.  The Southwest Maui Watershed Plan can be downloaded here: SMWP

 

Pohakea Stormwater Management Plan Implementation - 2020

In addition, MEC's work developing the Pohakea Stormwater Management Plan for Maui Nui Marine Resource Council has resulted in over $700,000 in grant funding for fiscal year 2020 from numerous Federal, State, and local entities. The monies will be used to implement many of the projects outlined in the Plan designed to mitigate for fire damage and stormwater pollution within the watershed.
